Nia’s Ark Inc. Launches African-American Prostate Cancer Awareness Sunday

High Point, N.C. - August 10, 2008—Churches across North Carolina are being mobilized to participate in the first annual African-American Prostate Cancer Awareness Sunday on September 28, 2008. This initiative augments National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month during the month of September. “African-American churches traditionally have educated congregations on health issues impacting the African American community and the program taps into the faith community’s influence,” says the Reverend Ronald J. Weatherford, founder of Nia’s Ark Inc.

North Carolina Governor Michael Easley has endorsed this initiative, a partnership among Nia’s Ark, the Carolina Community Network, the North Carolina Office of Minority Health, the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and the National Cancer Institute. Cancer Awareness Month runs throughout September. In an endorsement letter, Governor Hunt encourages churches to provide educational materials about prostate cancer September 28.

The goal is to provide education for African-American men so that they can make informed health care decisions about prostate cancer screening. Prostate cancer is highly treatable if detected in its early stages.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has identified 17 North Carolina counties as leading the world in the prostate cancer mortality rates. African-American men die at twice the rate of white men, although African Americans are only 21 percent of North Carolina’s population.

Nia’s Ark, a ministry conceived by the Reverend Weatherford, has been raising health awareness in churches since 1999. The CDC has long recognized the vital role of the faith community in combating health issues. Nia’s Ark organization aims to build the capacity of faith-based and community-based organizations to address health disparities.

To participate in the first annual African-American Prostate Cancer Awareness Sunday; congregations should contact Nia’s Ark at 336-689-3605 or niasark@aol.com.
